The Anita & Hans Nittnaus “Kalk & Schiefer” is an acclaimed Austrian red wine produced in the Burgenland region.Made from 100% Blaufränkish, the name translates to “limestone and slate,” reflecting the mineral driven soils of the Leitha hills near the village of Jois. The flavor profile is one of clean, cool toned minerality balanced by warmly spicy dark berry fruit, with high acidity, and gentle tannins.This wine is spontaneously fermented, added for one year in 500 liter Stockinger oak barrels, and has minimal sulfur added.This wine pairs well with roasted poultry, lean red meats mushroom dishes, and a charcuterie of traditional Austrian cold cuts, prosciutto, and medium aged cheeses (like Comte and Gruyere).
