Lopez de Heredia Vina Tondonia Reserva (2013)

A wonderfully traditional and hauntingly complex Rioja with aromas of dried cherries, sour plums and redcurrants, together with dried roses, orange peel, leather and sweet tobacco. Fascinating secondary notes of truffle, forest floor, cedar and warm spices emerge with air. Medium-bodied and wonderfully energetic, with remarkably fine, polished tannins and vibrant acidity carrying the fruit effortlessly across the palate. There’s an intriguing combination of ripe cherry and savory plum with dried herbs, black tea, vanilla and earthy mushroom character. Nothing is heavy here. The extended American-oak maturation has become beautifully integrated, leaving subtle cedar and spice rather than obvious wood. Long, savory and slightly saline on the finish, with dried flowers, citrus peel, tobacco and crushed stone. Ethereal, traditional and wonderfully alive. Drink now or hold.
